Cops: New Milford based jet ski business was scam
LITCHFIELD — A business owner was arraigned in Bantam Superior Court Wednesday on charges he allegedly stole jetskis and forged related sale documents.

Brian Dunn, 32, whose address is listed as 350 Diamond Bridge Ave., Hawthorne, N.J., was issued a $10,000 bond on third and fourth-degree larcneny and second-degree forgery charges.

According to warrants for Dunn’s arrest, he is the owner of CT Powersports, which operates out of a New Milford office. New Milford police first took notice of Dunn on Jan. 12 when they received a call from state police in New Jersey, who said they had traced a jet ski reported as stolen to a Norwalk home as part of a multi-state investigation into Dunn’s business dealings.

The homeowner reported that he had purchased the jet ski from Dunn last year along with an accompanying trailer. The man told police he had first contacted CT Powersports the year prior when he paid the company to winterize his jet ski. Documents he contacted Dunn again in the spring of 2009 as part of a search for another jet ski, and Dunn offered to sell him a 1997 Yamaha model and trailer for $1500.

Upon the equipment being delivered to his home, however, the man said he refused the offer.

“Dunn sent someone down with the ski and trailer and right away I could tell the ski was not worth it,” he told police.

He eventually agreed to pay Dunn $500 for the equipment, but found it was defective upon starting it. He told police that he never heard from Dunn again.

According to the warrant, police also made contact with a New Milford man who claimed that he had approached Dunn in April 2009 about selling his two aging jet skis and a double storage trailer. He allegedly agreed to pay the man $3,500 once he could sell the equipment, which he promised to do “by the end of the weekend.”

The man told police that he pursued Dunn for months in an attempt to obtain the money, only to be paid in partiality and have Dunn eventually cut off contact by disconnecting his phone.

When he approached New Milford police to file a complaint, he was originally told he would have to file a civil complaint, but eventually was presented with paperwork showing that Dunn had sold his jet skis and trailer to the Norwalk man, and had forged his signature in the process.

New Milford police also reported receving a complaint from a New York woman who claimed Dunn picked up a jet ski he had sold to her in order to repair it, only to have it never returned.

Dunn’s next appearance in Bantam Superior Court is scheduled for March 31.

A phone number listed for CT Powersports New Milford location was no longer working Wednesday.

New Jersey state police did not respond to requests for information on the investigation that led them to contact the New Milford department.
