The 8th annual Mark Hahn Memorial 300 mile personal watercraft race is shaping up to be another international challenge unlike anything other than the IJSBA World Finals. To date with about one half of the typically 50 team field filled there already are entries from nine nations: Russia, Belgium, Japan, Uruguay, Australia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Jakarta, and from US states Texas, Nevada, California, Wyoming, Louisiana, and of course Arizona.

On Saturday, February 25th these and about twenty more riders will line up on the beach at Crazy Horse RV Park and nervously await the shotgun blast that will signal the start of the race of this, the longest personal watercraft endurance race in the world. The start is particularly exciting as it is the only true Le Mans start in all of motor racing world wide.

Named for the famous sports car 24 hour endurance race held in France the riders line up along the beach, holding their safety keys in the air while their crew chiefs hold their watercraft in the water with the engines off. At some time within two minutes after the playing of the National Anthem a shot gun is fired and they run to their boats, start them (hopefully very quickly) and race off on the first of 30 laps around a ten mile course.

Yet another thing that sets this race apart from all others is that the length of it requires refueling the boats under real race time conditions...ju st like a NASCAR race except these boats must be placed on a trailer and pulled twenty feet from the water before the refueling can begin. It is said that the race can’t be won in the pits, but it sure can be lost there. There is no other watercraft race in the world where the pit crews play such an important role and the outstanding crew is rewarded with the coveted SeaDoo Team X Pit Crew Award at the impressive awards banquet following the race hosted by event executive producer Mike Follmer.

In addition to the awards and incredible international bragging rights cash prizes are given courtesy of the event title sponsor, Hot Products. Speaking of sponsors they too are international with local firms such as Days Inn of Lake Havasu being joined this year by ETS Racing Fuels of France.

Now in it’s eight year event producer Jim Russell of Havasu based DSM Events said “we couldn’t continue this event without the great cooperation of so very many regulatory agencies and we salute the BLM, United States Coast Guard, Mohave County Sheriff’s, United States Wildlife Service and Lake Havasu City as well. And new for 2012 we welcome the overall event sanction by the IJSBA”
